Far-Seeing Wisdom[]

Although not a dramliza gift, Er Thom was perceptive and shrewd. Because of repeated attacks on his clan by some then-unknown nemesis, he sensed that Liad and the core Liaden Worlds may become inhospitable in the not too distant future. Thus, he sought to build trade loops with Terrans:

"Korval had lost many trade partners and allies in the so-called core worlds upon their banishment from Liad. The outspace Terran contractors, however, simply continued as they had been doing, and it was Master Er Thom’s system of interlocked and intersecting routes that was the main source of the clan’s income now." [4]

Also, according to his logbooks, he considered creating a clan safe house — a “Dragonhold” — far from Liad, out in Rostov's Dust bubble:

The last mention of it was a memo revealing his belief that Korval might soon need a place to go— he called it Dragonhold— and that perhaps it might be wise to shape a route that included Edmonton Beacon, or even Spadoni Station, though at the time the memo was written, Spadoni was still embroiled in that wretched bubble.[4]

Lifemate Bond[]

  • Er Thom is not a dramliza but for his ability to form a life-mate bond with Anne Davis, who is not a dramliza but for her ability to form a lifemate bond.
  • Anne's gaffer / grandfather was a water-finder:

"Lifemates?" Petrella flung back with pain-wracked scorn. "Which of them is a wizard, pray?"

"Well, now, the gaffer, he was a water-witch," the tall lady said in a peculiar, lilting voice, a glimmer of half-wild humor lighting her pattern.

The Healer frowned after the sense of the words, feeling a similarity to Terran, but unable to quite —

"A water-witch," Korval murmured in Adult-to-Adult, "is one who has the ability to locate water below ground without use of instrumentation." He flicked a glance at the Terran lady. "Correct?"

She moved her head up and down—Terran affirmative. "He found other things, too," she said in accented, though clear, Liaden. "Lost sheep. Jewelry, once or twice. A missing child. But mostly he stuck to water." She shrugged.[5]
